In celebration of the lunar New Year’s Day, Korea Cultural Heritage Founadation will have a special event.
In the Gyeongbok palaces, Sehwa, or New Year’s Painting, is presented to visitors.
The event is modeled on the king’s costume from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) of distributing a painting to his
courtiers in celebrating a new year. As the year 2012 is the Year of Dragon according to the Chinese zodiac,
this year’s painting for visitors is the copies of Unnyongdo (Painting of Cloud Dragon), which are also found
in an interior wall of Sajeongjeon, the king’s office in Gyeongbok Palace. The ceremony of the king’s distribution
will be reenacted in Gyeongbok Palace on January 23 at 2 pm.
The dragon used to be regarded as a sacred animal blessed with mysterious power, and was a symbol of hope
and abundance. The painting expresses the hope of passing the state examinations and having prosperity in
every respect of life.
Besides, Korea Traditional Cultural Center, Incheon International Airport will present a various of events.
Visitors can enjoy korean traditional performance as well as traditional cultural experience making bokjori(pouch).
