Mickey in the Palace: Art Beyond Boundaries The Mickey in the Palace: Art Beyond Boundaries exhibition is themed around 'Mickey and Friends' exploring the city of Seoul. Debuted in 1928 with Steamboat Willie, Mickey Mouse has become an iconic symbol of The Walt Disney Company and one of the most beloved characters in the history of animation. Through the collaboration between the Korea Heritage Service and The Walt Disney Company Korea, the exhibition is held at Deoksugung Palace, a significant cultural heritage site and historical monument representing both the Joseon Dynasty and the Korean Empire. Dondeokjeon Hall, the venue for the exhibition, was reconstructed to its original form in 2023 based on thorough historical research. This historic Western-style building, originally constructed to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Emperor Gojong's enthronement ceremony, reflects a commitment to uphold the modern nation's sovereignty. Primarily used as a reception hall for diplomatic activities and communication with foreign envoys, Dondeokjeon was reported to have been demolished during the Japanese colonial period in the 1920s. Today, Dondeokjeon in Deoksugung stands as a central symbol of modern Korean history. In this context, the exhibition introduces a new chapter where Korean tradition encounters Disney, a globally renowned cultural icon. Focusing on the adventure of Mickey Mouse and his friends-Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy, Pluto, and Chip 'n Daleas they journey through Seoul, South Korea, the exhibition features artworks inspired by these characters, presenting them with the Korean royal heritage in a seamless way. These iconic characters represent the creative vision of Walt Disney, the founder of the Walt Disney Company, who crafted entertainment that resonates across generations. They still stand as premier examples of creative and innovative cultural content, continuing to inspire positive societal values.
In the exhibition, Mickey in the Palace: Art Beyond Boundaries, the seven featured artists-Jaewon Kang, Sambypen, Seo Woo Park, Buwon, Seonglib, Nayoung Wooh, and Jin Seung Jang—, along with Eugene Ahn, a Dancheong artist certified in the national cultural heritage specialization, and Moon Hyun Lee, traditional ceramic artist, explore the possibilities of borderless and multi-layered interactions from their unique artistic perspectives as 'Mickey and Friends' visit Seoul. Mickey Mouse is far more than just an animation character - he is a global cultural icon bridging the past and the future. The imaginative portrayal of 'Mickey and Friends' visiting Seoul, combined with the creativity of the featured artists, opens up fresh possibilities for aesthetics, transcending the boundaries between the traditional and the contemporary. In particular, Mickey in the Palace: Art Beyond Boundaries is held at Dondeokjeon Hall in Deoksugung Palace, a venue of rich historical significance. Originally serving as a reception hall during the Korean Empire, Dondeokjeon Hall was not only a site of royal significance but also a symbol of the era's aspirations. This venue honors the deep-rooted heritage of traditional Korean culture while reflecting the distinctive character and history of the palace. The exhibition provides a new and meaningful artistic perspective, crossing the boundaries of time and space. It invites the audience to experience the distinctive beauty of quintessentially Korean and globally recognized elements, featuring classic Disney icons against the historical backdrop of the palace through the works of prominent Korean artists.
